Power Levels

All skaters must wear full hockey gear.
The Canpowerskate Program emphasizes fun, participation, challenge and achievement. The Program is now more comprehensive than ever, with additional levels for skaters already in the program who wish to continue their power skating development and with the addition of Pre-Power for younger skaters just starting out. Pre-Power is designed for young skaters, approximately four to six years of age who can stand up on skates and move forward (shuffle, walk or glide) who may not be ready for CanPowerSkate Level 1. Pre-Power helps develop basic skating abilities in a powerskating specific environment, including balance skills, forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and agility skills. The curriculum is presented in three progressive levels complete with its own awards to encourage participation and motivate skaters.

Program Format

Classes are usually rigorous 50 to 60 minutes and include:
> a stationary warm up
> a slow moving warm up
> a skill review
> new skill instruction and practice
> conditioning and power skating drills
> a cool down period
Amount of time a skaters takes to complete the entire program (six levels) may depend upon age and ability. The number of hours spent on ice in Canpowerskate and in game situations where skills are reinforced also contributes greatly to their progress. Skaters will develop better balance, power, agility, speed and endurance as they learn and improve upon the following skating fundamentals

Canpowerskate Levels
Pre-Power CanPowerSkate includes the development of the following skills for the younger skaters:

SKATERS MAY ADVANCE TO LEVEL ONE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE COACH.

The CanPowerSkate program consists of skills divided into six levels, arranged in progressions gradually increasing in complexity. Levels 1 to 3 focus on the fundamentals of skating, Levels 4 to 6 place additional focus on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck/ring. Skaters are evaluated on skill level and are timed as they perform a test involving skills in a course-like pattern. The skater receives a mark combining his skill performance plus test time. This determines whether the skater receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold award bar for that Level.

Determination of Awards
The skater’s total mark is a combination of the mark assessed for skill performance plus time.
Skaters may earn bronze, silver or gold award.
D1 = Developing 1 point
D2 = Developed 2 points
D3 = Highly Developed 3 points
