Levels and Rules

The Canpowerskate Program emphasizes fun, participation, challenge and achievement.

Program Format – Classes are usually rigorous 50 to 60 minutes and include:

  • a stationary warm up
  • a slow moving warm up
  • a skill review
  • new skill instruction and practice
  • conditioning and power skating drills
  •  a cool down period


Levels

Amount of time a skaters takes to complete the entire program (six levels) may depend upon age and ability. The number of hours spent on ice in Canpowerskate and in game situations where skills are reinforced also contributes greatly to their progress. Skaters will develop better balance, power, agility, speed and endurance as they learn and improve upon the following skating fundamentals.

Pre-Power Level A,B & C

Designed for young skaters, approximately three to six years of age who can fall down, get up on skates and can move forward.

SKATERS MAY ADVANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL AT THE DISCRETION OF THE COACH.

  • Hockey stance & V position
  • Forward skills including altering feet, 2 foot glide, snowplow stop
  • Backward skills including walking & sculling
  • Forward skills including one foot glide
  • Backward skills including sculling, 2 foot glide, skating altering feet, snowplow stop, glide with two foot jump

CanPowerSkate

Consists of skills divided into six levels, arranged in progressions gradually increasing in complexity. Levels 1 to 3 focus on the fundamentals of skating, Levels 4 to 6 place additional focus on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck/ring. Skaters are evaluated on skill level and are timed as they perform a test involving skills in a course-like pattern. The skater receives a mark combining his skill performance plus test time. This determines whether the skater receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold award bar for that Level.

DETERMINATION OF AWARDS - The skater’s total mark is a combination of the mark assessed for skill performance plus time.
Skaters may earn bronze, silver or gold award.

  • D1 = Developing 1 point
  • D2 = Developed 2 points
  • D3 = Highly Developed 3 points


LEVEL 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 - YOU MUST ACHIEVE GOLD BEFORE ADVANCING TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 1

STOPPING BOTH WAYS, BACKWARD SKATING, BACKWARD STOP, TIGHT TURNS BOTH WAYS AND FAST FORWARD SKATING.

  • Bronze 14, 15, 16 pts. in 40 seconds or less
  • Silver 17, 18, 19 pts. in 35 seconds or less
  • Gold 20 or 21 pts. in 30 seconds or less

 

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 2

TURNING RIGHT TO LEFT AND LEFT TO RIGHT, FORWARD CROSS OVERES CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE, BACKWARD SKATING OVERES CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE, AND THE FAST FORWARD START.

  • Bronze 14, 15, 16 pts. in 50 seconds or less
  • Silver 17, 18, 19 pts. in 45 seconds or less
  • Gold 20 or 21 pts. in 40 seconds or less

 

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 3

STOPPING BOTH WAYS WITH A CROSS OVER START, MOHAWK ( LEFT TO RIGHT AND RIGHT TO LEFT TURN, BACKWARK ONE FOOT STOP, PIVOT CLOCK AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE.

  • Bronze 16, 17, 18 pts. in 45 seconds or less
  • Silver 19, 20, 21 pts. in 40 seconds or less
  • Gold 22, 23, 24 pts. in 35 seconds or less

 

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 4

SPIN-O-RAMA, ONE FOOT SIDE STOP BOTH WAYS, AGILITY WORK, 360 BOTH WAYS, PIVOT BOTH WAYS, FORWARD QUICK CROSS OVER BOTH WAYS

  • Bronze 20, 21, 22, 23 pts. in 1 min 15 sec. or less
  • Silver 24, 25, 26, 27 pts. in 1 min. 4 sec. or less
  • Gold 27, 29, 30 pts. in 55 seconds or less

 

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 5

FORWARD SKATING WITH CHANGE OF SPEED, FORWARD AND BACKWARD LATERAL MOVEMENT, FAST BACKWARD START, BACKWARD TO FORWARD PIVOT BOTH WAY, BACKWARD AGILITY, COMBINATION OF PIVOTS, AND FORWARD 360 BOTH WAYS.

  • Bronze 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 pts. in 1 min. 45 sec. or less
  • Silver 29, 30, 31, 32 pts. in 1 min. 35 sec. or less

 

CanPowerSkate LEVEL 6 with puck

FORWARD SKATING, STOP BOTH WAYS WITH CROSS OVER START, FORWARD AND BACKWARD CROSS OVERS, FORWARD AND BACKWARD LATERAL MOVEMENT, FAST FORWARD START, COMBINATION OF PIVOTS, 180 TIGHT TURN AND 360 THIGHT TURNS BOTH WAYS.

  • Bronze 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 pts. in 1 min. 50 sec. or less
  • Silver 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 pts. in 1 min. 40 sec. or less
  • Gold 39, 40, 41, 42 pts. in 1 min. 30 sec. or less

Testing Day & Fun Day

Pre-Testing will be during the first week of each session. Test Day will be the second (2nd) last day of each session. Fun Day will be the last day of each session and awards will be presented to the successful skaters.

Rules

Skaters that are not registered 7 days prior to the start of a program are subject to late fee charges. All power skating students must have and wear full hockey gear including stick. Requests for session transfers will be accommodated if possible at the discretion of the school director. Student conduct on the ice will be dealt with at the discretion of the staff pros and\or the school director. Any breach of conduct will be dealt with immediately.

Cancellation Policy
Request for refund must be made within 30 days prior to the start of the session. A $30.00 administration fee will be charged per refund request. All other refunds must be accompanied with a Doctors note.
